I listened to Walter Williams guest host the Rush Limbaugh show this afternoon after seeing someone mention on Facebook that he was talking about nullification. It was certainly nice to hear that discussion on such an establishment-oriented program.
During the segment I listened one caller recommended that everyone check out Tom Woods’ book Nullification and he referred specifically to the Ludwig von Mises Institute. Another mentioned jury nullification and promoted the FIJA and similar organizations whose goal it is to have more folks begin nullifying unjust laws via the jury box.
I do however have one issue with an unrelated statement Williams made. He was discussing welfare and social security and mentioned essentially that two thirds of the federal budget could be described as taking from one American and giving it to another. The reality is of course that all of the federal budget takes from one and gives to another.
Every cent the government spends first comes from someone else. This includes of course welfare, but also the salaries of all federal employees and contractors and every supply acquisition.
Update: You can listen to the podcast on the Tenth Amendment Center’s page, here.

I’m surprised that he mentioned it, but I’m not surprised that, while he sees welfare and social security as taking from one and giving to another, he has not yet made the leap to seeing all of the federal budget as taking from one segment and then giving to another segment.
Having said that, this is progress. One step at a time.
